Mining and Vicksburg

There are two versions of the ride to Vicksburg and Winfield. The first travels on the County Rd, which is mostly maintained, to Winfield. The second goes beyond Winfield, up steep and rough mining roads.

The Route:

Head west up County Rd 390, past Clear Creek Reservoir. The road is maintained but washbroady to Vicksburg.

Stop at Vicksburg. The old cabins are privately owned and well maintained.

During certain days/hours, the mining museum is open. After checking out the museum, walk the main street of Vicksburg. The tall aspen trees and old cabins are very picturesque.

Continue heading west on Rd 390. The road gets a little rough, but is passable without 4wheel drive.

The Rd 390 ends in the mining town of Winfield. Several of the buildings, including the school house, have been restored and have interpretive displays. Many buildings in Winfield are privately owned.

After checking out Winfield, the short trip ends here, and turn around and head back east on Rd 390.

For the more adventurous and experienced 4wheelers, head through Winfield and up the mining roads behind town. Go only as far as you are comfortable, then turn around and head back to Winfield.
